More than 56,000 fans welcomed their Super Bowl champion Packers back to Green Bay, after the team won four consecutive games on the road to win the Lombardi Trophy.
Many of the fans that made the trip to the stadium spent the day there, soaking in the thrill of the first Super Bowl championship for the Packers in 14 years.
“Couldn't make it to the Super Bowl, so I wanted to come down here,” said Tom Ford of Mondovi.
Katie and Kevin Ives' daughter Melanie has cerebral palsy. Tuesday was the first time the five-year-old from Augusta had been to Lambeau Field.
“I just want her to remember the experience and know that it's OK to fight for what she wants,” Katie said.
Other fans say the team is special, and not just because they won the biggest game of the year.
“They aren't owned by some man and it's just...cool,” said Sandy Bowe of Chippewa Falls.
“It's just fun to see all this,” Chippewa Falls Mayor Greg Hoffman said. “I think it actually brings people closer together."
During the afternoon, thousands braved frigid temperatures to see the Lombardi Trophy, and the players who brought it home.
“It's a great day to be a packer, isn't it?” General Manager Ted Thompson asked the crowd.
“We would come here if it was 40 below,” said Scott Richards of Marshfield. “It's all how you dress for it.”
The players all took a turn thanking fans for a year's worth of support.
“Guess what? We're Super Bowl champs, baby!” wide receiver Donald Driver said.
Even when someone wasn't speaking up at the podium, the fans stayed on their feet, practically for the whole hour. The cheers were biggest upon mention of Super Bowl MVP, Aaron Rodgers.
“We're champions of the world! Put that on whenever you want!” Rodgers said, referring to his “championship belt celebration.”
A victory lap around Lambeau finished off the day
“The Super Bowl is everything but just being a part of the packer family is everything too,” Luke Sankey of Menomonie said.
Fans say they hope they'll see a similar "Return to Lambeau" next year.
“The whole team deserved this,” Bowe said.
It was a homecoming celebration for a team of champions, and their championship-caliber fans.
