All looked bleak for the Green Bay Packers last month following back-to-back losses to Minnesota and Tampa Bay last month, but thanks to a three-game winning streak, the Packers have re-established themselves as serious NFC wild card contenders. Green Bay is 3-0 in the second half of their season, and while catching the Minnesota Vikings for the NFC North division title is not going to happen, the Packers have a good shot at making the playoffs. If the season were to end today, Green Bay would be in the post-season albeit as the #6 seed in the NFC and would play at Dallas in the wild card round. I believe the Packers would like their chances going up against the Cowboys and would feel comfortable playing either Dallas, Philadelphia, N.Y. Giants or Arizona on the road in the first round. Who knows? The Packers could win a first round game and end up playing the Vikings in the NFC Divisional round. Wouldn't that be something? Packers vs. Favre- Part 3. Okay, I'll stop dreaming. But really, it isn't that far-fetched. I believe the the Packers will win three of their final five games. Green Bay should beat Baltimore, Chicago and Seattle, and will likely drop games at Pittsburgh and Arizona. If the Steelers and Cardinals are without their starting quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Kurt Warner and then those games become VERY winnable. Both those qbs have had issues with concussions this year, and who knows if they'll be healthy when Green Bay plays them. Having covered the NFL for the past 15 years, I will say that teams that have momentum heading into the playoffs can go a long way. Packers fans will remember that Denver with John Elway won three straight road games to get to the Super Bowl. Denver then went on to upset Green Bay in Super Bowl 32. Anything can happen! With Aaron Rodgers and a much healthier offense, the Packers can put up points in a hurry. Defensively, they have in my opinion the best player in the NFL with cornerback Charles Woodson. Through 11 weeks, the Packers rank #1 in total defense. Not bad despite getting torched by Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings twice this year. As the Packers embark into the month of December, one thing is for certain, Green Bay will play meaningful football the rest of the way. So do you think the Packers are playoff material? |
