The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver were a huge success! The United States brought home the most medals ever in the Winter Games, a total of 37. Once looked upon as an after thought at the Winter Olympics, the USA is now one of the elite countries in the games. Gold in men's figure skating, hale-pipe snowboarding, four-man bobsled, nordic combined, downhill skiing, short track speed skating, yes the names are plentiful: Shaun White, Evan Lysacek, Bode Miller, Lindsey Vonn, Shani Davis, etc. And will ever forget the men's hockey showdown between the USA and Canada. Two of the greatest hockey games I've ever seen on back-to-back Sunday's. I was too young to appreciate the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" team that beat the Soviet Union and that American team that won gold was more significant because of the time in our nation's history. It was pretty cool watching Siren native Molly Engstrom compete in her second straight Olympics for the United States women's hockey team. Several of Team USA's squad had ties to Wisconsin, and of course head coach Mark Johnson is an Olympic hero from Madison. Just goes to show you that Olympic dreams can begin anywhere. I am proud of the stories that WEAU 13 News reporters and SportScene 13 staff provided our viewers during the past several weeks. Another example of the high quality product that we try to bring to even the casual television watcher. I think it's a good thing that we have the Olympics every two years, the Summer Games will be held in London in 2012. It's a wonderful way to see sports in it's purist form, watching young men and women represent their countries, reaching for gold and setting examples for the next generation of Olympians. I was very proud to be an American on Sunday watching our Olympic men's hockey team take on Canada for the gold. No the USA didn't win, but I thought our players handled the loss with class and in the proper spirit of sports. Disappointed, but gracious in defeat. A wonderful example for the world. |
