Shakers and Makers: American Folk Art and Beyond Art Exhibit

Galaudet Gallery rings in the holiday season with American Folk Art and Fine Crafts. This eclectic art exhibit begins with art made by 1800’s Shakers alongside fine artists of today and makers of our region. Challenging stereotypes of both folk art and fine art brings fun and interesting art into Galaudet Gallery. The Tower Room’s 500 square feet of space holds the stereotypical American Folk Art found in Shaker art from the mid 1800’s along with folk art produced in the late 20th Century. Shaker Artist Hannah Cohoon’s A Bower of Mulberry Trees (1854) was the initial inspiration for this exhibit since the arching Mulberry trees with text from the Book of Revelations beneath them has charm in the simple lines and colors but also a depth from the Cohoon’s vision about art and faith. Charles Wysocki’s later 20th Century images of a mythical American history that is both storybook and naïve has a similar charm since it springs from a similar source. The Studio Gallery’s over 500 sf displays the forward motion of American Folk Art and how it has come into its own since the 1960’s. Once a term meant to define a period style of art, now Folk Art defines self taught artists who choose experience over education in their pursuit of creating art. Wesley Willis hangs next to Andy Warhol to show how Pop Art holds Folk Art values. That Warhol was trained as an illustrator and not a fine artist did not stop him from becoming a successful artist who changed the face of late 20th Century art

Tour Of Homes

Event Dates and Times

12/2/2017 - Starts: 12:00 PM - Ends: 4:00 PM
420 Wilson Avenue, Menomonie
For over five decades, the Tour of Homes sponsored by the Women’s Fellowship of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Menomonie has been a holiday event that many people look forward to each year. The theme for the 53rd Tour of Homes is Gifts of Love, and it will take place on Saturday, December 3 from 12noon to 4:00 pm.

Each stop on the tour, including the church, is extensively decorated in the Christmas spirit. A map is printed on each ticket and plenty of signs will be posted to show where to go.

At the First Congregational Church, located at 420 Wilson Avenue, visitors will find the Gift Shop, with wonderful gifts such as scarves, mittens, aprons, and holiday decor made by church members, and the SERRV table, which is a marketplace for fair trade, handmade products from around the world. The lower level of the church houses the popular Gifts from the Kitchen and the Bake Shop, which feature delicious homemade pies, breads, candy, snack mixes, Christmas baking, and other treats.

While at Church, visitors should be sure to stop in the elegantly decorated Tea Room in the Fellowship Hall and enjoy a cup of Russian Tea or coffee and homemade cookies in a relaxing atmosphere with live holiday music. These refreshments are included in the cost of the ticket and the Tea Room represents the talents of many church members, young and old.

Advance tickets are available from any woman in the church and from the church office, 9am to 1 pm Monday through Friday. They can also be purchased in advance at Dick’s Fresh Market, Estate Emporium and La dee dah in Menomonie. Tickets can be purchased on the day of the tour at the church or at any tour house. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 the day of the tour.
