Mental health remains a top health priority in both Chippewa and Eau Claire counties. This free community event will address the growing concerns for our youth in the Chippewa Valley, identify factors that can help protect youth from poor mental health, and provide resources to support them in overcoming adversity.
The evening will begin with an engaging presentation by Angie Weideman from the Chippewa Public Health Department and Brook Berg from UW-Extension. Following will be a panel discussion featuring local experts from the fields of healthcare, human services, and education.

Growing Up the Hard Way- Children and Mental Health

Event Dates and Times

5/3/2018 - Starts: 9:00 AM - Ends: 4:00 PM
Sacred Heart Hospital, 900 Clairemont Avenue, Community Auditorium, Room Community Auditorium, Eau Claire, WI, 54701
Understanding and treating adolescents is hard work, and what makes it even more challenging on social workers and treaters is having to improvise based on little evidence-based data. Add on top of that pharmaceutical companies and their representatives are eager to promote their own points of view, which usually involve the use of one medication or another. These factors make it hard for professionals to stay well informed on the topic.
This program will provide a comprehensive review of mental health in children and contributing factors starting at the beginning (healthy and unhealthy pregnancy) and ending at the dawn of adulthood. Throughout we will explore what needs to go right and what often goes wrong – attachment, cognitive changes, emotional mastery, risk-taking, substance abuse, and the development of resilience. This information will be based on the best evidence available in the professional literature regarding development, diagnosis, and treatment.
