(WEAU) Bangor:

The U.S. postal service recently announced that it was closing the Bangor post office indefinitely because of health hazards.

The sudden closing has left people in Bangor no choice but to go to West Salem for postal service.

Many say the closing of the Bangor post office has brought the community together.

“It’s word of mouth. Everyone’s asking, 'Do you need mail picked up in West Salem? We’ll go get it while we’re there,'" said Erin Atkinson, a waitress at the Village Inn in Bangor.

Erin Atkinson had her fair share of help. One of her neighbors, Greg Peterson got her mail, and other neighbors mail.

“I was working quite a bit last week. Greg Peterson’s been getting my mail for me. That was very nice," said Atkinson.

The transition hasn't been easy for everyone. Those who normally walked to the post office, now have to drive.

Margret Chalsma, is a avid walker and says she doesnt like the change.

“I have to drive down here to get my mail, but when I’m in Bangor I walk to the post office," said Chalsma.

It’s about a ten minute drive to the West Salem Post Office from Bangor.

The Bangor neighbors hope to find out on Wednesday at the meeting they won’t be making the drive much longer.

The meeting is at 6:30 P.M. on Wednesday, at the Bangor High School. All are invited to come, and it will give a chance for people in Bangor to talk about what should be done.

“I’m hoping they’ll figure out how to get a post office here in town for all the elderly people. It’s easier for everyone to get their mail here instead of driving," said Atkinson.

Pete Nowacki, a spokesman for the us postal service says the idea of fixing up and using the current post office is a possibility.

“What were trying to do is to work with the landlord to see if we can get the repairs made and get this building back into shape so we can get back in there," said Nowacki.

But he says, it could be a substantial amount of time before the postal problem is resolved.
