LA CROSSE (WEAU)- Construction on a major La Crosse roadway has turned it into a dangerous road. Since the construction started on Losey Boulevard this summer city officials say more than 20 accidents have been project related.

A lot of the accidents are happening where the two lanes merge into one going south. Audio Mobile is on the corner of where the lanes change and Head Installer Paul Clements says it’s almost a daily scene.

“People are driving way too fast. I’ve seen people rear-ending people and it’s usually a three car pile up a day,” said Clements.

So far no one has been seriously hurt, and the construction is at the halfway mark.

“We have 2 inside lanes close to completion done now. They should be done within the next week or so, but we still have the outside lanes to do yet,” said Assistant Public Works Director Robert Haines.

Construction is scheduled to be done mid-late September. The city is encouraging motorists to take alternate routes if possible.

“The utility has been taking so much time. It’s the sewer, gas, water, and various utilities out there that we are working on that are adding to the length,” said Haines.

The project is costing the city thousands.

“Right now we are thinking 800-850 thousand just for roadwork,” said Haines.

Reverend Bill Hoglund, from 1st Congregational Church says the construction is impacting his church for the summer, but believes it’s necessary.

“You have to want to get to this church. We know it’s a good thing. The Wisconsin winter does a lot to our streets but it will be real nice when it gets done,” said Hoglund.
