EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. (WEAU) - The new Eau Claire County jail is close to completion but delays are keeping its first residents out longer than expected.

"There's been some glass that's been broken a couple of times during shipment and we're waiting for reshipment and reinstallation of that," jail project manager Frank Draxler said. "They have to go through a whole new process and remake it. And this is the fourth time on some of these pieces."

"We are also waiting on some last minute adjustments to our security electronics, and that's taking a little bit longer than what was expected."

Draxler said the setbacks are relatively minor and that the costs won't put the project over budget.

"We believe we can make up the timeframe in the latter phases of the project," he said.

With the completion date now expected in early Sept., Draxler said some surprises were expected.

"Each time we (our staff gets) together, each time we see some things that we have to change and adjust, there's been some surprises, certainly and we take them in stride and we go one by one and tackle them and move on to the next one."

But he said, in the end, all the hard work will be worth it.

"We'll have a building here that's going to last for many many years beyond our time ... We feel proud that it turned out this well," Draxler said.
