(WEAU) - "I was taking my car in to get repaired and as I got there I had to turn the radio on and I could hear a broadcast that an airplane had hit one of the towers," said Leroy Jansky, Vietnam War veteran.
Most Americans remember what they were doing on September 11th, but according to the American Pulse Survey, only 12 percent of Americans will commemorate the attacks by going to a memorial or dedication ceremony.
The 11th anniversary was a day similar to the September 11th attacks, but the memorial now at Ray’s Beach in Chippewa Falls is helping people in the community remember.
"They can come back here and they can see this nice big memorial and be happy because it represents all the veterans,” said Ed Nayes, Master of Ceremonies.
Ed Nayes, master of ceremonies, says it’s our veterans who fought for our freedom and now future generations can pay tribute to them, while also remembering September 11th.
"Somebody has to be there in our country is out there for to get the freedom and it takes our troops to do it,” said Nayes.
Veteran Leroy Janske of the Vietnam War agrees that people are forgetting 9/11.
"A lot of people might forget and not care as much as they did back then," said Janske.
He has also seen it with the Pearl Harbor ceremony he does every December 7th.
He's even noticed fewer reports about soldiers injured in Afghanistan..
"You don't see much anymore and that's wrong. We finished largely in Iran and were still in Afghanistan we still need to support those troops."
