LA CROSSE (WEAU)- The murder of Sara Hougom was a random act of violence and the possible link to gang activity.

Police say the suspects, Pao Choua Vue and Kong Vue are gang members although they refused to name the gang.

They entered in Sara Hougoms home to steal her purse, on March 26th. Home thefts are a common gang crime said Sargent Randy Rank.

“We’ve seen graffiti, entries to motor vehicles, theft to property, and some home entries," said Sgt. Rank.

It was a gang crime that went wrong that resulted in the death of Sara Hougom.

Police say they know of 4-5 gangs currently in La Crosse.

The gangs range from young to old; ethnic to motorcycle.

The La Crosse police do keep tabs on people they believe to be gang members. They receive their information through investigations, patrol officers, and tips.

The last known gang shooting in the La Crosse area was more than a year ago in Onalaska.
