Goodwill provides jobs for region

(WEAU) - 54 new jobs have come to Lake Hallie and employees have come from places like Cadott, Stanley and Bloomer.

"We're so diverse, we can roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty if we want to, there's also a lot of sale and business side to it too," said Kory Mikelson, Goodwill employee.

Goodwill says it has a School-to-Work Program and while the Eau Claire store has had students from North and Memorial High School, Goodwill hopes to gain more schools.

"What we're doing is bring the kids in and it gives them an opportunity to learn the retail end, see what we actually do and then gives them an opportunity to learn more about Goodwill also," said Mary Jarosz, Area Team Leader for Apparel.

She says they even help students by giving mock interviews and building resumes. Also, people who have a disability can join the Community Development Program to gain work experience.

"What we do is create a specialized job training program that can come in and have meaningful work, develop their skills and hopefully prepare them for the next step which is community employment and permanent employment,” said Vickie Basar, Community Development leader.

Other employees such as Kory Mikelson plan to stay and grow with Goodwill.

"One important thing to me is I want to finish up and get my degree and they actually have a program where you work here for a year, they'll help pay for your school," said Mikelson.

Goodwill also says students that are in the School-to-Work Program have the ability to get hired on after finishing the program. Goodwill also gives those who have committed minor crimes the opportunity to do community service hours.
