(WEAU) - Six town hall meetings is how Dr. Deer plans to gather information for writing his report to the governor on what needs to be done in Wisconsin.
"For fifty years, I've been to DNR meetings and you know what they don't listen to us, it's a waste of our time," said hunter, Ole Iverson.
Ole Iverson isn't the only hunter to feel that way.
And Dr. James Kroll says it's one of the biggest problems he's seen.
"A loss of confidence and lack of communication between the DNR and the people that the DNR works for," said Dr. James Kroll.
But hunters say the meeting in Black River Falls may help.
"It might but there are some people that have a view of the DNR that some people don't the DNR as good people," said hunter, Daniel Amundson.
Kroll believes he can fix the communication between the two and get the DNR out of their offices and into the woods.
Yet, another problem he wants to solve is how the state determines the number of deer in Wisconsin.
"There's a universal complaint about the sex age kill, SAK model, the DNR has been using to establish population goals," said Kroll.
He says DNR scientists need to spend more time talking to hunters and tackling the issues as a team.
"Landowners want not only foresters to come and help them develop management on their land but the wildlife folks to be a partnership with foresters and agriculturists and so forth."
As part of his contract with the state, Kroll will produce a report with all of his recommendations and forward it to the governor later this year.
We tried to get the DNR’s take on the town hall meetings, but a representative declined to comment.
