Onalaska, Wis (WEAU)- Two Onalaska police officers are taking the extra step toward the fight against drugs.
Onalaska police officer Rich Elias and his co worker Jim Page are conducting a presentation called “Drug abuse and its effect on our community”.
The coulee region has seen an uptick in drug abuse as of late. Officer Elias hopes the presentation will help make the neighborhood a better place.
Officer Elias has seen a lot of things while out on his rounds.
“I’ve seen heroine overdoses, meth, and abuse of prescription drugs. All the drugs are here, and they result in more drug related crime,” said Elias.
He says that the presentation can be shocking to small town folk.
“We show meth injection sites and other things that look like they have come from a magazine. It’s a real eye opener that these people were arrested right here in our community,” said Elias.
Onalaska police Sgt. Tim Berg says they need the community to be aware.
“The community is our first line of defense. We don’t have the resources to be everywhere. It’s best to educate so we can partner up and combat this problem,” said Sgt. Berg.
Elias says the presentation will be most helpful for parents and teachers but he says anyone is welcome.
“We try not to cater to young people that may find out how to do things by watching our presentation, but it’s for people who want to know more and can prevent what’s going on.
Elias says targeting high school drugs is his main focus right now.
“When I first started it was marijuana and alcohol. Now in high schools it’s prescription drugs, meth, and heroine can be found in the schools too,” said Elias.
The drug abuse seminar will be Wednesday, September 12 in Onalaska City Hall, council chambers at 6:30 p.m.
