Koula Trial: Closing statements to be given on Monday
LA CROSSE, Wis (WEAU)- The two sides in the Eric Koula murder trial are expected to present their closing arguments on Monday.
It was the final testimony that the jury heard before adjourning for the weekend.
The last witness was an FBI agent who has worked on his share of high profile cases.
“I was involved in the Oklahoma city bombing case. I was also at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics when the bombs went off and we processed the large area after the bombs went off in 1996. And after 9/11 at the Pentagon I spent two weeks processing evidence,” said FBI Agent Robert Morton.
Morton specifically works for the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crimes.
The defense says that the murders of the Koulas were likely the work of a professional killer.
A previous witness said that the defenses allegation was true because of three facts; the caliber of the firearm, that there were no casings found, and the placement of the shots to the head.
But Morton said that those three facts were not enough.
“Crime scene assessment isn’t 1, 2, or 3 factors. It’s numerous factors and to pull three factors and base analysis without considering anything else is not the correct way to do it,” said Agent Morton.
But when Koula’s attorney questioned the agent, Morton didn’t deny that a professional hit could contain all three factors.
“You’re not saying that the shots to the head don’t mean this is a professional killer correct?” said Defense Attorney Keith Belzer.
“Correct,” replied Agent Morton.
“And you are not saying that the fact that there was no casings means this wasn’t a professional killer correct?” asked Belzer.
“Correct,” replied Agent Morton.
When agent Morton stepped down from the stand that was the last testimony for the case. Judge Scott Horne then gave instructions for the closing arguments that will proceed next week.
“On Monday there will be the closing arguments and then the remaining 12 jurors will remain to deliberate,” said Horne.
