EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – A local neighborhood will have some extra eyes and ears out to keep the area safe.

The North River Fronts Neighborhood Association has just formed Eau Claire’s only known formal neighborhood watch.

Neighborhood Association Chair Kerri Kiernan told WEAU 13 News that the security group formed a couple months ago and involves six watchers.

“It's a group of people who are proactive about improving our security and communication,” Kiernan said.

The North River Fronts Neighborhood is a diverse area.

It stretches from Phoenix Park to Banbury Place and up to the North Barstow area.

Instead of driving around trying to bust suspicious behavior, the security group wants to take a different approach.

Kiernan said knowing your neighbors and looking out for them can go a long way.

“It's more so being proactive and respectful to encourage that behavior amongst everyone. And not being afraid to contact the police if necessary because you can prevent situations from actually happening,” Kiernan said.

The watchers said they’re also working with police in the area.

“We've gotten access to police reports to see over the past few years to see if anything is improving and where incidents are happening,” Kiernan said.

While focusing on keeping the neighborhood safe, the association said it also wants to take notice of the positives in the area like new housing and businesses moving to the area.

“Especially being so close to downtown and the Farmers Market and music in the park. We have a lot of people moving in and a lot of really like being here,” Kiernan said.
