ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) – The holidays may be over, but the season of giving never ends. On Thursday, one lucky woman had an unforgettable and unexpected day thanks to local businesses that are giving back.
Veronica Young was nominated and chosen for the 90 Days of Giving.
Morrie’s Mazda partnered up with Gordy’s County Market and Metropolis Resort to make the event possible. Three cars, $1500 worth of gas or groceries and a package for Metropolis Resort will be given to three people nominated and well-deserving, much like Veronica Young of Altoona.
When Bill Bertrand, general manager of Morrie’s Chippewa Valley Mazda, knocked on Young’s door Thursday afternoon, Young had no idea what was coming.
“I can't even explain how shocked I am. I’m too excited. I’m so excited I want to cry, but not in front of the camera, I’m going to wait till I get in the house and cry,” said Young.
Bertrand said the point of the 90 Days of Giving is to give back to the community.
“That's the whole reason for it. We wanted to do something that would reward people locally for their patronage to our business and really something to get involved with in the community,” said Bertrand.
With more than 600 nominations in this second round, Young’s story was one that stood out from the rest.
“Veronica is a single mom who oddly enough, the person who nominated her is a school counselor at her daughter’s school and that school counselor noticed Veronica walked her daughter to school and back from school every day regardless of the weather,” said Bertrand.
Guidance counselor of Altoona Middle School Brooke Kaldor nominated Young after one of her co-workers heard about the event through B95 radio.
“I was really impressed. She persisted through the cold and snow and to go to work every day, provide for her daughter and do what was best, I thought she was very deserving,” said Kaldor who added the school tries to do its part to help families in need.
Young’s daughter Alona who goes to Altoona Middle School said she loves her mom regardless of whether she has a new car or not.
“She’s the best mom in the whole world, so I hate when she walks to work because it takes a long time and it’s really snowy out there,” said Alona.
Veronica was the second of three nominated winners to take home a car and other prizes.
That means there is one more car left.
If you know someone or a non-profit organization that's in need, it's not too late to nominate.
