LA CROSSE (WEAU) - One of the first fueling stations in the United States to have multiple alternative fueling options is now open to the public.
The new station is located in La Crosse and offers Compressed Natural Gas and Liquid Natural Gas as alternative fuels.
Compressed Natural Gas costs half the price of unleaded gasoline at $1.59 a gallon, and supporters say it has less of an environmental impact.
“It’s clean, its American fuel, and it’s also inexpensive, said Hybrid Guru, Chris Schneider.
In May there will be 2 compressed natural gas stations in La Crosse.
“We’re putting a new station on 5th and Cass at the convenience store there,” said Kwik Trip CEO, Don Zietlow.
It’s the same natural gas that can be used to heat your home or stove.
“It’s pulled straight off the line, and then it’s run through the compression system, then through a dryer, and then it’s dispensed at the fuel line,” said Alternative Fuel Specialist, Ruanna Hayes.
Kwik Trip has a fleet of 20 vehicles ranging from car to semi that can run on the alternative fuel.
There are car’s available at local dealerships that are built for compressed natural gas. The Honda Civic is just one of them.
The Natural Gas Civic will get more miles per dollar compared to the Hybrid Civic said Schneider.
Compressed natural gas is predicted to be more available in the near future, with the possibility of more alternative stations later this year.
“The world is changing, technology is changing, and how we lived yesterday is going to be different than how we live tomorrow. We have got to find a better way to do it, and with natural gas I think it’s a better way,” said Zietlow.
