The recycle bank program in the Rice Lake area is meant to reward people for recycling. It's been going on since 2010, but now your recycling can reward a local elementary school.

The free program exchanges recycling for points, which people can normally trade in for discounts at local stores and restaurants. Allied Waste provides a recycling container where recycling is picked up every other week with a chip embedded on it.

"What it does is it weighs how much is recycled for that entire community and it distributes points among all of the active recyclers based on how much is recycled," explains Lynn Struzan with Allied Waste. But now through March 15th you can take your points and donate them to a grant for Tainter Elementary School to be put towards an environmentally friendly project.

"So people can go online and donate their points to the grant that's been set up for the Tainter school."

Once $1500 is raised through points donations from the program, Recycle Bank will match that $1500 making a total grant of $3000. With the $3000 that Tainter Elementary hopes to get through this recycle bank program, they're hoping to use the funds to renovate the front entrance to the school. "We wanted to provide more green space and we got some cement that's cracking and unsafe so we thought if we could use the money for the environment it would be a really smart thing to do," says Principal Lee Pritzl.

Whether its math or social studies, kids at Tainter are regularly exposed to learning about recycling. "Other schools will be doing this I’m sure in the future and what an opportunity to make some changes and it doesn't cost you any money," says Prtizl.

Allied Waste has continued to enhance its recycling program making it even easier to recycle all your recyclables in one container. "it can all be put into the same container, it can be co-mingled, and then we'll do the sorting. So that's even more reason and more encouragement for people to recycle is that it's so easy."

This is a brilliant idea that will help our young ones see the value in recycling to conserve resources. Allied Waste has taken a step in the right direction to offer a matched contribution as a reward that will affect the student's decision to reuse what can be kept out of an otherwise loaded landfill. Keep up the good work!
