Sick day proposal for Eau Claire schools

(WEAU) - "The only person that likes change is a baby with a wet diaper," said Ronald Martin, President of Eau Claire Association of Educators.

Changes are in the works for the Eau Claire School District as board members continue to work on the employee handbook. One proposal that may pan out is changing the amount of staff sick days.

“Everything is reliant upon an employee handbook and that's really what we’re working on with our administration,” said Martin.

Eau Claire Schools Superintendent Dr. Ron Heilmann says that dropping sick days from 12 to 10 may benefit the districts spending.

“You could make the argument you have 2 days times however many 10 month employees that the district would not be obligated to pay,” said Superintendent Dr. Ron Heilmann.

Meanwhile Ronald Martin of the Eau Claire Association of Educators wants to know if there has been an abuse of sick days made by staff or if there will in fact be a cost savings benefit.

“If it truly is a cost savings measure for the district, we have no problem with that, we know we have to make cuts here and there,” said Martin.

School Board President Carol Craig says the board wants to keep fairness and equity between employees since one day off for every month that person works has been standard.

Meanwhile the board also proposed another alternative for employees taking time off.

"There also was a discussion of combining sick days and personal days into time off duty or TOD, or paid time off," said Heilmann.

Either way a teacher can still accumulate up to 120 sick days, but that does not mean they will receive a payout.

The school board still has yet to decide whether the proposal for the sick day reduction will still go through.
