Onalaska, (WEAU)-People in one western Wisconsin community are dealing with a rash of vandalism cases.
These incidents on Onalaska’s north side involve broken windows, broken mailboxes, eggings, door bell ringing and damage to Halloween and Christmas decorations.
“My step-dad had a packers flag shoved up his tailpipe,” said Gabriel Shegoned, who lives on Oak Ave.
Police say the vandalism is mostly happening in the Westwood Drive and Oak Avenue area.
“My neighbors Christmas tree lights on their big Christmas tree were torn down. They worked really hard on that tree and it got torn down in one night,” said Shegoned.
It’s the amount of vandalism that has Onalaska police concerned.
“There’s been quite a few of them in the past month and it’s something we would like to get resolved,” said Onalaska Police Chief Jeff Trotnic.
Police and neighbors are suspicious that it may be a younger group doing it.
“This does have the appearance that it’s just kids acting out,” said Trotnic.
The vandals are doing more than just destroying personal property in the neighborhood. They have been known to break into unlocked cars and steal whatever valuables they find inside. Neighbors say they now have to take extra precautions.
“I lock my doors every night and I never keep my car unlocked,” said Shegoned.
If anyone in the area sees any suspicious behavior, especially after dark they should contact the police right away. You can reach dispatch at 785-5940 or the Onalaska Police Department at 781-9550.
“We had one person wait 30 minutes and we want them to call right away,” said Trotnic.
