(WEAU) - We have to really have all our good driving habits out there at this time of year," said Lt. Jeff Lorenz, Wisconsin State Patrol.
As the summer season approaches, construction workers have to compete for space to repair the roads.
Lt. Jeff Lorenz of the Wisconsin State Patrol says the most important thing to remember is speed.
"They try to do everything, they'll work different hours, they'll work a midnight shift and do it in the dark to reconstruct your road when there's off peak hours."
One driver says he doesn't use a cellphone whether he's in a work zone or not.
"I guess the problems are people are less attentive then they used to be driving on the road, it’s important that they don't be distracted," said driver, Mark Krause.
According to the Department of Transportation in 2010 about 1700 crashes happened in construction zones. The Wisconsin State Patrol says they do ticket speeders often.
"The Department of Transportation has special litigation agreements for the state patrol and other agencies to specifically come out into work zones," said Lorenz.
Lorenz also said there are frequent changes in lane closures, just like at I-94 crash.
"The closures we had over there were intermittent, where they'll close a section portion of that interstate you know for a short time, reopen it and they'll have to compromise it again because of what they’re doing," said Lorenz.
Drivers say because of the recent construction crash, it reminds them to stay attentive.
"It does make you more aware, because you do see things like that happening," said Daniel Defoe
"I just want to remind everybody out there to please buckle up when they travel. Please not drink and drive," said Lorenz.
