I would like to nominate Leah Berg for the Sunshine Award.
Five years ago this January 4th, Deputy Jason Zunker was hit and killed by a car on Hwy. 53 near Bloomer. Before his death, Jason wanted to get a program going called “shop with a cop” to do something nice for the children of Chippewa County that would otherwise not have a nice Christmas.
Leah Berg stepped right in and took over and the program was off the ground and running. Every year the program called “Jason’s Presents” puts on a meal and buys gifts for the less fortunate. Leah doesn’t think twice abut all the added work she puts into this program. She just knows what her co-worker and friend, Jason Zunker, wanted to do and is carrying out his wish while not thinking about her own personal exhaustion.
I had the good fortune to be invited to help with “Jason’s Presents” this year. I was amazed to hear that no one has ever sent in a nomination for Leah! I stood back and really took in all she does! It is so heartfelt with a smile on her face.
Leah runs a very organized ship…taking up collections, making sure each child gets the items they put on their wish lists, setting up for the shopping frenzy, wrapping gifts, cooking, and setting up the meal and the gift hand out! I am exhausted just thinking about what she does and all to honor her co-worker, fallen officer Jason Zunker.
Leah Berg is truly an amazing individual and she deserves some recognition for everything she is doing to make the children of Chippewa County have a merry Christmas. Thank you, Leah. Jason is resting in peace knowing the children are being cared for by his amazing friend!
