MENOMONIE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Hello Wisconsin welcomes the Ludington Guard Band of Menomonie. Carroll Lund, the former President joined the show to share a taste of its history. Plus, tuba performers share a live performance called Tuba Christmas.
According to the Ludington Guard Band, "This military organization was a cavalry unit called the Ludington Guard. It was named after the Honorable Harrison Ludington, then governor of Wisconsin. But the band that became associated with this cavalry unit was actually formed in 1869. Jacob (Mueller) Miller was the organizer and first director of this band and it played its first season in 1869, not 1877 as stated in the 1925 history of Dunn County. The band was not officially attached to any military unit in the beginning. After all Miller had fled Germany to escape military service only to find himself drafted into the American Civil War soon after his arrival.
In addition, the band has had only 12 directors in its 125 year history..
