Area volunteers assist Hurricane Harvey evacuees

DALLAS, Tx. (WEAU) -- Area volunteers are assisting with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Dallas

Retired CFO from HSHS Sacred Heart Dave Nelson is among the more than 100 Wisconsin Red Cross volunteers.

Nelson says volunteers are helping feed evacuees with food prepared by the Salvation Army, are coordinating services with FEMA and the VA as well as ensuring evacuees have access to cell phones through Verizon and AT&T.

The Red Cross is also registering evacuees with its Safe and Well program so family members can go online or call to see if their loved ones are safe.

Nelson said, “What we do see is many of the broken families. Many of the people coming here with basically plastic garbage bags full of a few clothes, a few items they were able to save but most of them have absolutely nothing left and that's some of the support we try and provide.”

Nelson says donations are always appreciated but for those who can't contribute financially he says blood donations are also badly needed.
