Athlete of the Week: Eau Claire Memorial golfer, Lexi Meade

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Eau Claire Memorial girls golf team is off to a hot start winning two tournaments in the first couple weeks of the season. Playing a huge part in their success is junior Lexi Meade, who has won a couple tournaments individually. Neil Hebert has the story in our Osseo Automotive Athlete of the Week.

Golf is a frustrating game; for some, maybe. But for Lexi, a 2016 state qualifier for the Eau Claire Memorial Old Abes squad, it hasn’t been this year; Lexi shot even par at her home meet at Wild Ridge Golf Course on Monday and she doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.

“I’d say it’s my goal to make it to state every year,” Lexi said. There are a lot of tournaments between now and then, so I try not to think about tournament time until we’re there. I try to get through all of the conference first, but it’s always in the back of my mind that I want to get there. And I think it’s attainable.”

Lexi’s attitude on the course is different than a lot of golfers; she stays even-keeled throughout the round, no matter how well she’s golfing.

“It’s important to set goals for the things that you know you can control: emotions and attitude are where I try to really focus my attention,” Lexi said. “Controlling your emotions if you hit a bad shot and then trying to move on and forget the bad shot."

“Lexi is wise beyond her years on the course and in the classroom and just as a person,” Sarah Schwellenbach, the Memorial girls golf coach, said. “As a golfer, she’s very analytical and she knows how to analyze her game. She knows when to take risks and when not to take risks: a very, very smart player.”

Her demeanor is the same on and off the course; modest and to simply put it, nice.

“In other sports, you kind of have to want to crush the other team or beat the competition and I never really liked that because I kind of felt like that’s being mean,” Lexi said. “But for me, this is just me trying to best myself every single time.

Mature beyond her years, Lexi uses golf as a way to prepare for what life will throw her way.

“Every time you go out, there are little instances that match the instances of life,” Lexi said. “You’re challenging yourself every single time and you’re overcoming those challenges. I think it’s really great preparation for meeting those challenges of life.”

Lexi plans to play in college, but before that happens, she has 2 more years to focus on her game as an Old Abe.
