UPDATE: Two people hurt in crash, car fire on Highway 53

ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- A crash and car fire caused backups on Highway 53 southbound Thursday morning near the River Prairie exit.

The Altoona Police Department says a tire came off a northbound car on Highway 53. The tire went through the median and hit a southbound minivan, which caused the minivan to start on fire.

A second crash happened a few minutes later in the northbound lane.
Two people were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Crews were called to the scene just before the River Prairie exit shortly after 6:30 Thursday morning.

The Altoona Police Department closed the southbound lanes for a few hours.

ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- Traffic on Highway 53 southbound is at a standstill right now, as crews fight a car fire.

Our photographer on the scene says a minivan is fully engulfed on the side of the highway, near the River Prairie Drive exit. At least two cars were involved in a crash before the minivan started on fire.

Crews were called to the scene shortly after 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning. At this time, there is no word on injuries.
