Community supports area teacher battling cancer

Eau Claire, Wis. (WEAU) -- Several people teamed up to support a local teacher and mother of two, who is battling cancer.

Local special education elementary teacher Katie Haugen is currently battling stage 4 melanoma cancer.

On Saturday evening a benefit was held in her honor with music food, a silent auction and a raffle.

Haugen's co-workers say tonight's event was just another way to show her support as she provides support for so many.

“Katie is an instrumental teach in our special ed. Department. She’s also very influential coach in Special Olympics program. She gives more than just at school,” said Bill Giese, principal at Sam Davey Elementary.

“She’s probably a little overwhelmed with all of the support but really excited people are coming out. She’s such a kind and caring person we just wanted to give back,” said Erin McCracken.

If you're interested in donating, organizers say you can contact Sam Davey Elementary school.
