Crews searching Flambeau River for two missing people

LADYSMITH, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Ladysmith Fire Department is looking for two people who went missing after their canoe capsized in the Flambeau River on Thursday.

WEAU 13 News has confirmed the canoe capsized at 2:46 p.m. Thursday afternoon, near the Clearwater Paper Corporation. Officials say a worker at the facility witnessed the canoe capsize.

Crews involved in the search include the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department along with Life Link medical helicopter.

Officials also tell WEAU 13 News conditions on the Flambeau River are extremely dangerous right now, with a strong current in place. They also say the gates of a nearby dam are required to be open to ease rising water from this week’s storms.
