EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Eau Claire Area School Board passes a resolution Monday night in favor of changing Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Three eighth grade students brought up the proposal.

The students say this is an exciting time and they want community members to know about the history of Native Americans.

Meanwhile, a member of the Knights of Columbus says he would be in support of an indigenous holiday, but to still recognize Columbus Day.

“It's crazy we have this idea and it just brought up and succeeded really well and that we did really well and we were working super hard and it's great they're acknowledging it”, says Miinan White, one of the 8th graders who brought up the proposal.

“I respect their culture. I think it's a fascinating culture, but there's no reason to remove a Federal holiday and replace it with one when you can have both”, says Miles Casey, District Deputy with the Knights of Columbus, Wisconsin.

The resolution will go into effect next school year.
