Flowers in the shape of American flag bloom for veterans

SAUK CITY, Wis. (WMTV) -- Veterans are bringing some color to the Village of Sauk City.

The week before Mother's Day, Heroes for Honor planted more than 3,5000 red, white and blue petunias.

They've now bloomed in the shape of an American flag.

This -- along with a sunflower field -- is part of a fundraiser for Badger Honor Flight -- an effort to take veterans to visit the Memorials in D.C.

"Most veterans when they got out of the service they didn't have a big homecoming for them. It was individuals and some of them were not treated in the best so we just wanted to make sure and along with the Badger Honor Flight people they get what they deserve and its overdue," said Fritz Wyttenbach with Heroes for Honor.

There's no cost to check out the petunias or the sunflowers -- and you can even cut your own sunflowers.

Heroes for Honor suggests making a donation of $1 per flower.

The fundraiser lasts from August 1 until September 1.
