HAPPENING TODAY: Fundrasier underway for military families

EAU CLARIE, Wis. (WEAU) -- A program that helps military members and their families is underway and you can help!

The VFW’s Unmet Needs fundraiser is happening at Burger King restaurants all over west central Wisconsin.
The campaign runs through December 7 and is at all area Burger Kings

Friday morning a ceremony was held honoring veterans at the North Crossing location.
Gold Start Mother Kaye Olson was in attendance she said, “I like to remember my son at this time. Andy was killed in Iraq. It just helps to talk to people. It's good it's healing and that's the part I like.”
The campaign began in west central Wisconsin 11 years ago and is now held nationwide at more than 1,000 Burger King locations.

Co-owner Gene Hatfield said, “If the family needs some money for emergencies it's available and it's easily available. It's not a lot of red tape. They can basically go to their local post, fill out some forms, and quickly turn around so they have this money to take care of those needs.”

The money raised goes to $5,000 grants that help military families who have run into unexpected financial difficulties as a result of deployment or other military-related activities or injuries.

Commander of VFW Post 305 Richard Frietag explained, “If the families car transmission goes out we can help them. If the furnace fails we can help them. It's to meet the emergency crisis for families.”

So far Burger King's partnership with the VFW has raised $4.4 million.

“I think it's just a good feeling thing. It's just a sense of pride for everybody and shows and appreciation to our veterans for what they've done for us,” added Hatfield.

If you donate at your local Burger King location you can get discount coupons for Burger King and Action City.
