EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- A solar power group buy says it’s saving locals thousands of dollars on the installation of solar panels; the Affordable Solar Chippewa Valley Group buy had its first installation at a home in Eau Claire today.

Jim Schumacher of Eau Claire is the first of 15 home owners that have signed solar power contracts under the group buy to power his home with solar energy, saving him thousands of dollars. Schumacher says he’s always been interested in getting solar power for his home, and this group buy has allowed him to get it at a much lower cost.

Thirty-two solar panels will power Schumacher’s home: an investment he thinks will save him a lot of money in the future.

“My values are to help contribute to our country’s energy independence,” Schumacher said. “I’m not going to lie, I’d like to save some money and I expect to save 10s of thousands of dollars. I would like to be an example to my neighbors to show it can be done.”

Schumacher says he thinks it will take him around 10 years to get a return on his investment, a period of time he’s willing to wait.

And if you want to get involved with the group buy, there’s still time.

In order the on-average 20% discount on everything included with the solar installation associated with the group buy, you have to sign a contract by the end of the year.

On top of that discount, Ellen Terwilliger, with the Affordable Solar Chippewa Valley Group, says there are more ways to save if you go solar.

“Very exciting news is that the Focus on Energy rebate through the state of Wisconsin has been renewed for the next couple years,” Terwilliger said. “We’re still waiting to hear the final price, but it could be up to $1,500 or so off of your installation on top of the group buy discount.”

Terwilliger says the switch to solar isn’t just good for the environment; it can help you save.

“Right now, many people are choosing to go solar because economically, it makes sense,” Terwilliger said.

“I’d invite people to join us with this group buy and get a quality installation at a great price,” Schumacher said.

If you’d like to learn more, there is just one more free educational meeting about the group buy Tuesday night at 6:30 at the Lazy Monk downtown Eau Claire.
