Milwaukee school staffer accused of body slamming boy

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Prosecutors filed charges against a Milwaukee school safety officer after surveillance video showed him body slamming an 11-year-old student on a concrete floor.

Milwaukee prosecutors say in charging documents that 60-year-old Charles T. Smith initially denied the Feb. 1 incident at Lloyd Barbee Montessori School but relented when told about the video.

The arresting police officer says Smith told him he would "owe" him one if the officer reported that "the facts are unfounded."

Smith's first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon on a felony charge of physical abuse of a child. He doesn't have an attorney listed in court documents.

Milwaukee Public Schools says Smith has been suspended until the case is resolved.

The investigating officer says the student "suffered pain throughout his body," swelling and bruising.
