CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU)-- The receiver involved in the financial outlook of Gordy’s Markets has sent a notice of potential plant closing or mass layoffs at 25 sites.
The receiver, Michael Polsky, said in the notice, the grocery is currently trying to find suitable buyers for the stores.
However, if the company is unable to do so in sixty days, beginning on August 29, more than 1,000 employee jobs may be permanently eliminated. That includes both union and non-union employees.
In a notice the company indicated it is impossible to determine which employees, if any, may be affected at this time.
The Department of Workforce Development says it received a Wisconsin Business Closing and Mass Layoff notice for sites in the North Central, Northwest, Southwest, West Central, and Western Workforce Development areas.
The DWD says it will coordinate initial communication with Gordy’s and will work with its Rapid Response teams to offer services to the affected business and workforce.
The notice also indicated that employee’s healthcare benefit coverage may also be terminated in sixty days. The notice went on to say the company regrets having to make the decision but circumstances leave no alternative.
