LAKE HALLIE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Access to Business 53 from intersections along the construction zone between Highway 124 and Melby Street will be closed for short periods through the end of September as the intersections are paved and curb and gutter and signals are installed. This includes the intersection at 27th Avenue near ShopKo and Farm & Fleet.
Traffic will keep flowing on Business 53 through this period, but, at any given time, intersection work will prevent motorists from turning onto or off of Business 53 at the affected intersection. Only one intersection will be affected at a time, and most intersection restrictions will take place at night. Some periodic, short-term daytime restrictions will be necessary.
Within the next two weeks the new Business 53 intersection at 21st Avenue will open, and, at that time, the nearby 118th Street intersection will be permanently closed.
Construction workers have witnessed dangerous and illegal behavior among some drivers in the area during this summer’s reconstruction project, and they warn the public that the upcoming intersection work will make it particularly important for drivers to obey traffic laws and adhere to marked construction zone lanes and speed limits to maintain the safety of the public and construction workers.
The entire 2-mile, four-lane project is expected to wrap up in mid-November.
