Skyler Burnette, 21, of Sparta, was killed in the shooting.
Deputies responded Sunday morning to a report of a domestic violence incident at a home on the 1000 block of Saint Anne Street. When they got there, they say Burnette was threatening a woman with a knife.
Deputy Jesse Murphy, with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office shot Burnette, and he died at the scene. Murphy has been placed on administrative leave, which is department policy.
The DOJ says Deputy Murphy was hired by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office in 2006. Three Sparta police officers were present at the time of the shooting.
DCI says it is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Monroe County District Attorney when the investigation is finished.
