Old Abes win double-OT thriller to advance to state championship

MADISON, WI (WEAU) Grant Thielbar found the back of the net in double overtime for Eau Claire Memorial to defeat Waukesha 2-1 in the WIAA State Semifinal for boys hockey.

The first two periods of the game were very sluggish, with either team able to scores. But in the third period, Memorial would get on the scoreboard first with a Brenden Olson goal.

But Waukesha would not go away quietly as Kevin Broda used a wrap-around goal to even things up at 1-1.

After a scoreless first overtime it took over twelve minutes in the second extra period for Thielbar to get his game winner.

Both goalies played great, with Waukesha's Garrett Larsen stopping 44 shots and Trevor Hudecek of Memorial stopping 22.

Eau Claire Memorial will face Big Rivers Conference rival Hudson in the championship game on Saturday. The defending state champion Raiders beat Memorial at home and tied with the Old Abes at the Hobbs Ice Center.

The championship game will follow the girls title game which is scheduled to start at 12:10PM.

It will be a double header of Eau Claire hockey action as the ECA Stars will play Sun Prairie for the girls title.

Eau Claire Memorial will be looking for their third title overall, last winning in 2013.
