(WEAU) La Crosse - A construction program for high school students will likely begin this fall.

11th and 12th grade students are able to sign up for a Construction Academy that will prepare them for careers in the construction industry.

Technical Engineering teacher, Nick Kalina, says he's seen a lot of interest in the academy from students.

“It’s a real neat opportunity, and a lot expressed how excited they were to have opportunity for the academy,” said Kalina.

It will be a two year long program that will cover a wide variety of job opportunities.

“Certain people will be focused on carpentry or masonry, but then there’s the engineering side of it, or the design aspect of it,” said Kalina.

Annette O’Hern added, “Students can try drywalling, carpentry, or general contracting. We're looking at adding a career component to what we already have.”

Despite cuts, Annette O’Hern says it’s the partnerships with businesses in the community that’s made this program possible.

“We had some business partners step forward and share with us they would be very interested in working with our students,” said O'Hern.

One big aspect to the program is that it will add math into the construction classes.

“We will be involving the math department, and other departments. We're taking construction concepts, and putting it into an entire year course," said O'Hern.

Kalina says that about 20 students will have to sign up for the academy to get it off the ground, but he doesn’t see that being a problem.

“From the students I’ve talked to, I think we’ll have what we need," said Kalina.
