(WEAU) - Ice fishing, a sport that Prairie Farm High School students are now competing in as a team.

“I joined last year because I thought ice fishing team would be pretty cool. Never heard of it before,” said junior, Tristan Beyer.

The self-funded team fishes in six competitions annually with the help of their coach, Wendy Dallman.

“I asked the kids if they wanted to do it. Put up a flyer and we had fifteen kids last year join the team” said Coach, Wendy Dallman.

While the team has existed for a year now, this is the first time they've helped the elementary school. Pre-K teacher Amber Carlsrud wanted the kids to enjoy the experience.

“They said what do you do with the ice once you catch it. So I had to try and explain to them what ice fishing was,” said teacher, Amber Carlsrud.

It was a beautiful day out on the lake; the kids were smiling and drinking hot chocolate.

Parents and students also shared in the joy of spending time with family.

“Beautiful day. Nice and warm and we caught some fish didn't we Ella?” said Adam Moen parent.

“My little brother and my dad we’re out here. So it was fun to see my little brother Nathan running around with an ice fishing pole, said senior Liz Boesl.

The kids even enjoyed themselves while trying to keep warm.

“Courtney: Do you want to come out here again? Kodi Wendt: (Shakes her head no)."

“Courtney: Do you want to come back again? Braydin Buck: Mhm... "

“Courtney: How come? Braydin Buck: Because."

“Courtney: Because why? Braydin: Because I like it out here."

Maybe ice fishing fever is catching on with the next generation of anglers.
