Democrats will pick a new speaker of the Wisconsin state Assembly on Wednesday.

The 52-member Democratic caucus is scheduled to meet that day to secretly vote for their new leader. Democrats took control of the Assembly from Republicans in last week's election.

The previous speaker, Mike Huebsch of West Salem, says he will not seek his party's top position, which is now minority leader. Republicans are meeting Monday to fill that spot.

The speaker is the top position in the Assembly. He or she sets the party's agenda and works with the governor and the Senate.

Four lawmakers are running for speaker. They are Mike Sheridan of Janesville and Pedro Colon, Fred Kessler and Jon Richards, all of Milwaukee.
