(WEAU) - The House of Representatives has passed a local congressman's bill.
Congressman Sean Duffy (R-Weston) has introduced a bill that would extend the pay freeze for federal employees. The pay freeze was initially passed during the last session, and would have lasted for 2 years. Duffy's bill would extend the freeze another year. Duffy says his bill would also apply to members of congress, where the first freeze didn't.
He says he wants federal workers to help shoulder the same burden as tax payers. Duffy told us by phone Wednesday “They're working less hours to make sure they keep their jobs, they're not getting an increase in pay, why do we want that American tax payer to pay for a pay increase for the federal worker who makes more than 15% more than they do.”
Congressman Ron Kind (D-La Crosse) says he plans on supporting the bill. He says he agrees that members of congress shouldn't get a raise, but that he's disappointed the bill quote doesn't support working families that haven't received a raise.
President Obama opposes the move. He proposed a .5% raise for federal civilian employees.
