A group of area seniors held a celebration to mark the 75th birthday of social security Thursday.
Members of the Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans hosted a party at the L.E. Phillips Senior Center in Eau Claire. Party-goers praised social security as America's most successful government program.
Social security provides benefits to more than one million Wisconsinites. Besides sharing a cake, speakers discussed the importance of social security and the adjustments needed to have it for future generations.
Billy Feitlinger of the Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans said "15% of the people in this country today under the age of 18 would be in poverty without social security. 45% of the workforce that gets disabled on the job would be in poverty.”
Similar events were held around the state and across the country this week in order to defend the program from proposed cuts.
