Eau Claire police officers say they found a drunk college student passed out near the Chippewa River early Sunday morning.

Officers found the 25-year-old man about half-way between the bike path and the river at 400 Riverside Avenue.

A responding officer says there was a strong smell of alcohol at the scene.

According to the police report, he was unconscious and very drunk. Officers say he did have some minor cuts and scrapes on his hand, chin and forehead.

"The main reason the person was there was the level of intoxication,” said Officer Jason Kaveney, with the Eau Claire Police Department. “The person didn't know he was there. He just got so intoxicated that he ended up in that location. Fortunately, our officers found him."

Officer Kaveney says the man was taken in for detox, but says there’s no word on what his blood alcohol level was at the time.
