MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle has named the deputy secretary of the state's Agriculture Department as the secretary following the drowning death of his predecessor last month.
The 43-year-old Randy Romanski takes over for Rod Nilsestuen, who had been secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection since Doyle took office in 2003. Romanski had been deputy since December 2007.
Doyle says that Romanski was an integral part of the department's recent successes.
Doyle is not seeking a third term, so Romanski's role as secretary will last only through the end of the year unless the next governor decides to keep him.
Romanski will be paid $120,000, which is $3,000 less than Nilsestuen made.
