The Buffalo County Sheriff's Department says 53-year-old Lawrence Ellenberger of Maiden Rock died in the Chippewa River Saturday.

It happened in the Tiffany Wildlife Refuge along Highway 35 near Nelson.

The sheriff says Ellenberger and another man were in a fishing boat around 5:30 Saturday afternoon when the motor stopped working. Ellenberger was trying to pull start the motor when he lost his balance and fell into the water. The passenger was able to stop the boat after it had circled the victim several times.

Deputies say the other man in the boat did try to help the victim but was unsuccessful.

The Winona County Dive and Rescue Team recovered Ellenberger's body at about 8:30 Saturday night in about 15 feet of water.

The sheriff says neither man was wearing a life vest.
