MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The leading advocate to ban gay marriage in Wisconsin is endorsing Republican Sean Duffy for Congress.
Julaine Appling led the 2006 campaign for the referendum that rewrote Wisconsin's constitution to ban gay marriage.
She says Duffy "supports traditional marriage and other timeless values" and is best positioned to defeat Democrat Julie Lassa in November.
The endorsement is significant because Duffy's opponent in next week's primary, Dan Mielke, has called him soft on the issue of gay marriage.
Duffy years ago appeared in a low-budget parody movie called "The Wedding Video" about a gay couple getting married.
Duffy has said the movie's "not consistent with my values" and he supported the 2006 ban.
