The Eau Claire County Humane Association is getting more dogs and cats surrendered to them than they can handle. If the trend continues, their Executive Director said it could end up driving them over budget, which is based entirely on donations.
Almost 40 dogs and more than 100 cats at the humane society are now being doubled up in cages. The problem is surfacing at a rather opportune time, as Saturday is the association's second annual Responsible Dog Ownership Day.
"It's really about being a responsible pet owner," said Lauren Evans, Executive Director of the association. "We hope to get that point across."
Volunteers will be at a booth as a part of the International Fall Festival in downtown Eau Claire Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
