Controversial Wisconsin Military Site Closes
The U.S. Navy Thursday shut down two submarine communications stations, including its site at Clam Lake in Ashland Count.
The locations were part of Project ELF, which is an ancronym for extremely low frequency, which transmitted classified information to U.S. missle submarines anywhere in the world. ELF was developed during the Cold War and was suspected by opponents as being a Soviet missle target. ELF allowed submarines to remain hidden and undetected.
Clam Lake was the scene of countless protests and demonstrations mainly by anti-nuclear groups. The navy located its transmitters at Clam Lake because of the expanse of underground granite.
The other site is near Escanaba State Park in Michigan's UP.
