As part of their participation in the eighth annual International Walk to School Day, students at Delong Middle School held a ceremony to mark the opening of their new pedestrian underpass.

The underpass runs below Clairemont Avenue and Vine Street, connecting the two and providing a safe passage for commuting students.

The project was started six years ago after Delong seventh grader Kristi Brummond was struck and killed while crossing the busy intersection.

Members of Brummond's family attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and said the completion of the tunnel serves as closure.

The tunnel was the idea of Kristi's classmates, many of whom returned for today's ceremony, and was funded by a four hundred thousand dollar federal grant.
