National Depression Screening Day

According to local experts, one of every five people could be diagnosed with clinical depression, if they'd only get screened for it.

Officials from the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill will be at the L.E. Phillips Senior Center in Eau Claire offering free depression screening in connection with National Depression Screening Day and their annual meeting.

Doctor Brian Stress is an Eau Claire psychologist who will speak on the subject during the event. He said while fewer than ten percent of depressed people have their condition treated, those who do likely get the result they're looking for.

"About eight out of ten people benefit," he said, "So it's a very treatable diagnosis that can improve the quality of a lot of people's lives."

Common symptoms of depression include feeling hopelessness or overwhelmed, and having a lack of motivation or energy.

The free screenings are between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. For more information on depression, call NAMI at (715)836-9977.
